An Air National Guardsman from Toledo who was seeking employment as a hitman unknowingly submitted his resume to a joke website called www.rentahitman.com. The website, which was originally created for a cyber security startup, had been converted into a parody site with false testimonials about hitman services. The Guardsman, Josiah Ernesto Garcia, was contacted by the website administrator, who was actually an FBI agent, and offered a job to kill a man who did not exist. Garcia was willing to carry out the job and even offered to provide a photo of the dead body. He was subsequently arrested by the FBI and pleaded guilty to using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire. Garcia faces up to 10 years in federal prison at his sentencing in February 2025. This incident is not the first time that individuals have been caught trying to hire hitmen through websites. In other cases, individuals have used the same website, www.rentahitman.com, to try to hire hitmen for various purposes. Despite warnings, people continue to submit absurd requests for hitman services through these websites, putting themselves at risk of being exposed.
