Scott Peters, owner of Crabbie Dad’s bar in Steinhatchee, Florida, has faced numerous challenges during his nearly two decades in business, including hurricanes. After Hurricane Helene hit the town, causing devastating flooding and destruction, Peters’ bar was severely damaged. The storm surge destroyed the iconic sign, windows, walls, and floors of the bar. Residents of Steinhatchee, like Jamie Lee and Pamela Keen, were shocked by the extent of the damage, with debris scattered throughout the town and waterlogged houses and businesses. Residents, including John Kujawski, pointed out the destruction caused by past hurricanes, making recovery even more difficult. Peters, who has previously refused government aid, is now considering accepting assistance as he faces the daunting task of rebuilding his bar and possibly his home. He plans to cancel water and power bills to prevent further costs and hopes to use fishing income to sustain himself while awaiting insurance and government help. Despite the challenges ahead, Peters remains determined to rebuild, even if it takes years, piece by piece. For now, he faces the reality of starting over and the uncertainty of what lies ahead for his business and his community in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
