More than 5,000 people gathered in Brussels on Monday to support the employees of the Audi factory and their subcontractors, as well as to call for a European industrial policy to defend jobs. The rally, initially organized in solidarity with workers facing restructuring at the Audi plant, has now become a call to preserve Europe’s industrial sector as a whole.
The automotive industry is facing challenges such as declining car sales in Europe and the competition from Chinese electric cars. Participants at the rally stressed the need for a more comprehensive approach on a European level, highlighting issues such as high energy costs and the lack of investment in future technologies like electrification.
Maurizio Reggia of the Italian union FIOM emphasized the importance of European industrial policies to provide solutions for workers facing an uncertain future. The demonstrators, including former Audi employees and political representatives, stressed the need for reindustrialization in Europe to address the current challenges facing the industry.
As the European Union establishes new institutional teams, this demonstration serves as a way for the trade unions to make their voices heard at the beginning of this new mandate. The call for a unified European industrial strategy to protect jobs and industries in the face of global competition remains a pressing issue for workers across the continent.
