Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pleading for Western allies to allow Ukraine to strike military targets deep inside Russia after a Russian-guided bomb killed at least one woman and injured 42 others in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. The bomb struck a multistorey apartment building, causing a fire that spread across multiple floors and damaged 12 other buildings.
The 94-year-old woman’s body was recovered from the ninth floor of the building, while 42 people, including three children, were injured. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov condemned the attack and highlighted the urgent need for assistance in defending against Russian aggression.
President Zelenskyy emphasized the necessity of long-range capabilities to protect Ukrainian lives and condemned Russia’s continued air attacks on various regions, including Sumy and Donetsk. He stated that the Russian army has been carrying out around 100 air attacks daily, resulting in extensive civilian casualties.
Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of civilians have lost their lives. Despite Russia denying intentionally targeting civilians, the recent bombing in Kharkiv showcases the devastating impact of the conflict on innocent people. The international community is being urged to assist Ukraine in defending itself and preventing further loss of life.
