Colin Farrell’s spin-off HBO series, “The Penguin,” was already in the works while the hit movie “The Batman” was being made. The series follows the story of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, a disfigured Gotham City gangster, portrayed by Farrell in a completely transformative role. Makeup artist Mike Marino, who was Oscar-nominated for his work in “The Batman,” also worked on creating Farrell’s Penguin character.
The design of the character was inspired by director Matt Reeves’ vision of a sympathetic and complex gangster, similar to characters from ’30s and ’50s gangster films. Farrell spent months in the makeup chair to transform into the Penguin, with the initial application taking eight hours. Despite the long process, Farrell found it to be a rewarding experience that helped him get into character.
Farrell delved into the psychology of the Penguin, exploring his paranoia and desire to be seen as more than just someone who is physically disabled. Taking off the makeup at the end of each day was a relief for Farrell, allowing him to separate himself from the dark and cruel character he portrayed on screen.
“The Penguin” is set to stream on HBO/MAX starting on September 19th, giving viewers a deeper look into Farrell’s complex and compelling portrayal of this iconic Batman villain.
