The New England Patriots suffered a tough 23-20 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks, with one pivotal play being a controversial defensive pass interference call against Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones. Seahawks receiver Tyler Lockett even admitted to Jones that the coverage was not a penalty. Patriots safety Kyle Dugger also disagreed with the call, stating that both players were battling and the call went in favor of the defense.
Despite the questionable penalty, the Patriots’ secondary struggled throughout the game, allowing big plays and penalties that ultimately contributed to the loss. DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba combined for 22 catches and 241 yards, while Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith had a solid performance with 327 passing yards.
Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers acknowledged that the team cannot rely on officials and must make plays to secure victories. The defense did improve in the second half, allowing just six points, but the early mistakes proved costly.
Now, the Patriots have a short week to regroup as they face the New York Jets on “Thursday Night Football.” With both teams sitting at 1-1, the Patriots will look to address their defensive issues and bounce back with a win in Week 3.
