Ohio Sen. JD Vance, former President Donald Trump’s running mate, downplayed far-right political activist Laura Loomer’s racist comments about Vice President Kamala Harris’ Indian American heritage on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Vance stated that the focus should be on policies and issues rather than Loomer’s remarks. Loomer had made derogatory comments about Harris, suggesting that the White House would smell like curry if she won the election.
Vance defended Loomer, claiming she is not affiliated with the Trump campaign, and said that discussing dietary preferences like curry is not insulting. He mentioned that his wife, who is Indian American, enjoys curry. When asked if he was offended by Loomer’s comments, Vance said they were a distraction from Harris’ policies and reiterated the importance of focusing on her presidential campaign.
Vance’s response mirrored Trump’s approach of distancing himself from Loomer despite their association. Loomer, known for spreading conspiracy theories including about 9/11, has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. Despite this, Trump brought her to the 9/11 memorial ceremony at Ground Zero, further igniting controversy. Vance and Trump avoided directly addressing Loomer’s comments, opting to shift the focus to more policy-oriented discussions.
