The Big E, one of the largest fairs in the country located in West Springfield, is hosting Equestrian events this year. Equestrian events have a long history in the Olympics, dating back to the ancient Olympic Games as chariot racing and first featured in the modern Olympic Games in 1900 in Paris. Equestrian comprises three disciplines at the Games, with men and women competing on equal terms. One of those disciplines, jumping, is being featured at The Big E. Riders and horses are timed for jumping over obstacles, with time penalties for each obstacle toppled. Agility, technique, and harmony between horse and rider are essential for success in this event.
Peter Wylde, who competed in Equestrian Jumping in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, will be involved in The Big E’s Hunter Classic on Sunday. The competition began earlier in the week and will conclude on Sunday at 8 a.m. Other upcoming horse shows at The Big E include The Big E Draft Horse Show, 4-H Horse Show, and the Saddlehorse Show. The fair, which runs until Sept. 29, also features concerts and a variety of food options for attendees to enjoy. Equestrian fans and horse enthusiasts alike will not want to miss the exciting competitions taking place at The Big E this year.
