As families gear up for the start of the school year, ensuring that children are healthy and ready to learn is a top priority. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends regular visits with the pediatrician and staying up to date on immunizations to keep all family members healthy. The AAP also offers ten tips for giving children their best chances for success this school year.
Some of the key tips include checking how many hours of sleep your child gets each night, scheduling a well visit with the pediatrician, getting annual flu and COVID vaccines, and doing a mental health check-in with your child. It is important to address issues like racism, hate, and bullying, as well as promoting regular school attendance.
Other tips from the AAP include avoiding the morning rush by preparing the night before, creating or updating a family media plan to balance screen time with other activities, having a sick day plan in place, and developing a school action plan for children with chronic health issues.
Families are encouraged to work with pediatricians and schools to support their children’s overall well-being. By following these tips and staying proactive about health and wellness throughout the school year, children and teens can thrive and succeed academically and socially.
