In a game on Saturday night, Tyler O’Neill shined for the Boston Red Sox with two home runs in a 7-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox. This defeat marked the White Sox’s 111th loss of the season, leaving them just nine losses away from tying the record for most losses in a season since 1900. Despite Andrew Vaughn’s two-run homer in the first inning, Chicago struggled to keep up with Boston, trailing 7-2 by the fifth inning and losing their 19th consecutive series. O’Neill’s stellar performance included a two-run homer in the first inning and another homer in the fifth off Enyel De Los Santos, bringing his total to 27 home runs this season and securing the win for the Red Sox.
With this victory, Boston improved to 72-70 and is now four games behind the Minnesota Twins for the AL’s final wild card spot. Trevor Story also made a significant return to the lineup after missing 133 games due to a shoulder injury. In addition to O’Neill’s stellar performance, Connor Wong and Andrew Benintendi contributed with key hits to secure the win for Boston.
Manager Alex Cora praised the team’s performance and highlighted their resilience after a recent losing streak. The Red Sox are now 4-2 against the White Sox this season, clinching the season series for the first time since 2019. Up next, the White Sox will have RHP Chris Flexon starting in the series finale, while the Red Sox have yet to name a starter.
