Karen Read, a 44-year-old woman accused of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend by ramming into him with her SUV, expressed her feelings of stress and uncertainty in an interview set to air on ABC’s “20/20.” Read described her life as “no life” and feeling like she is in “purgatory” while awaiting a new trial that is set to begin in January 2025.
The case against Read ended in a mistrial in July after jurors were deadlocked on the charges. Despite a defense motion to dismiss several charges, the judge ruled that the case can move forward to a new trial. Prosecutors allege that Read and her boyfriend had been drinking heavily before the incident, where he was fatally hit by her SUV.
Read told ABC News that she felt an “immense sense of dread” as she searched for her boyfriend, not realizing that he had been hit by her vehicle. The defense has portrayed Read as the victim, claiming that her boyfriend was actually killed inside a fellow officer’s home and then moved outside.
After the mistrial, Read’s lawyers argued that the jury had actually agreed that she was innocent of certain charges, but the judge dismissed these claims. Prosecutors have urged the judge to dismiss these claims based on hearsay and conjecture.
As the case continues to unfold, Karen Read remains in a state of uncertainty and anxiety, unsure of what the future may hold for her as she awaits a new trial.
