A Massachusetts doctor has been sentenced to prison after admitting to punching a police officer during the January 6th storming of the U.S. Capitol. Dr. Ronda Colvin-Leary pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer and was sentenced to 18 months behind bars.
The incident occurred during the violent pro-Trump riot at the Capitol, where Colvin-Leary was captured on video punching a police officer who was trying to prevent him from entering the building. The officer was reportedly knocked unconscious by the blow.
Colvin-Leary, who is an anesthesiologist and mother of two, was arrested after the video of the assault went viral on social media. She initially denied the allegations but later pleaded guilty in court.
During the sentencing, the judge noted that Colvin-Leary’s actions were not only illegal but also disrespectful and dangerous. The prosecutor argued that her behavior was “unacceptable and intolerable” and called for a significant prison sentence.
Colvin-Leary’s defense attorney presented her as a dedicated physician who made a “terrible decision” in the heat of the moment. He argued that she was deeply remorseful for her actions and had no prior criminal record.
In addition to her prison sentence, Colvin-Leary will also have to pay restitution to the injured police officer and serve three years of supervised release. The incident highlights the severity of the consequences for those involved in the Capitol riot, as authorities continue to pursue justice for the violence and destruction that took place that day.
