A task force commissioned by UMass Amherst Chancellor Javier Reyes in response to mass arrests following an anti-war protest has released a report with recommendations for campus demonstrations. The Campus Demonstration Policy Taskforce was established following the arrest of over 130 individuals during a pro-Palestinian protest in May. The protest had been deemed unsanctioned, prompting Reyes to call in additional police agencies to manage the situation.
The report includes recommendations aimed at addressing complex issues surrounding campus demonstrations, such as balancing First Amendment rights with the rights of others, addressing civil disobedience within campus governance, and responding to policy or law violations in a manner consistent with the university’s values. Reyes emphasized the importance of finding solutions that respect freedom of expression while also ensuring the safety and well-being of all members of the UMass community.
The task force’s work comes in the wake of heightened tensions surrounding protests and demonstrations on college campuses nationwide. By providing clear policies and guidelines for managing demonstrations, UMass Amherst aims to create a safer, more inclusive environment for all members of the university community. Reyes encouraged feedback from students, faculty, and staff on the report’s recommendations, signaling a commitment to ongoing dialogue and collaboration in addressing these important issues.
