The risk of West Nile virus in Massachusetts continues to pose a threat as two more cases have been reported, bringing the total number of human cases in the state this season to six. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced the new cases on Tuesday, with one man in his 50s and another man in his 80s testing positive for the virus. In response to these cases, the state has raised the risk levels to high in several areas including Saugus, Arlington, Belmont, Malden, and more.
Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein emphasized that the risk of West Nile virus will persist until the first hard frost, despite the cooler temperatures in September. It is crucial for residents to take precautions such as using mosquito repellent when outdoors to prevent contracting the virus. So far this year, there have been 286 mosquito samples that tested positive for West Nile virus in various counties across Massachusetts.
Officials urge residents to protect themselves and their loved ones by eliminating standing water around their properties, using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and installing screens to keep mosquitoes out of their homes. The state has a map tracking the risk for mosquito-borne illnesses and advises the public to follow these preventive measures as mosquito activity continues.
