Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to all nine federal tax charges he faced, avoiding a trial as jury selection was about to begin. The sentencing is set for Dec. 16, with potential for up to 17 years in prison for the tax charges. Biden also faced federal gun charges earlier in June. Prosecutors argued that he spent extravagantly on travel, drugs, and escorts while neglecting his taxes. Biden’s lawyers attributed the missed payments to his chaotic lifestyle influenced by drug use. This plea deal comes after a previous agreement fell apart due to disagreements between prosecutors and defense lawyers. President Joe Biden, who declined to seek reelection as his son faced charges, has indicated he will not pardon him. The plea deal has been criticized by Republicans, who previously called a different plea offer a “sweetheart deal”.
