Emrah I., an 18-year-old Austrian with Bosnian roots, was killed in a shootout with Munich police as authorities suspected he planned an attack on the Israeli Consulate. Investigations into his motives are ongoing. The incident occurred on the 52nd anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics attack.
Emrah I., driving a car with a Salzburg license plate, was armed with an antique Mauser carbine with a bayonet attached when he was shot by police. It is believed that he was targeting the Israeli Consulate on the anniversary of the Olympics attack. Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed that the consulate was closed at the time of the incident.
Authorities suspect Emrah I. may have had connections with the Islamic State group. In 2023, he was reported on suspicion of terrorist organization membership and spreading IS propaganda. Austrian authorities found propaganda material on his phone after he exhibited violent behavior towards fellow students, though the case was closed by the public prosecutor’s office.
The shootout prompted a massive police response with 500 officers dispatched to the consulate area and a police helicopter circling the scene. The public was warned to stay away from the area via social media. Thankfully, no one besides Emrah I. was injured in the incident. The investigation continues to uncover the motives behind the attempted terrorist attack.
