Poll reveals corruption as major factor driving African youth to migrate

A new poll of young Africans across 16 countries found that nearly 60 percent want to leave their countries due to government corruption. The survey, conducted by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation, revealed that 83 percent of respondents are concerned about corruption at home, with 62 percent feeling the government is not addressing the issue. In addition to corruption concerns, 72 percent worry about the negative impact of foreign influence.

Despite these challenges, the survey showed a rise in “Afro-optimism” from the previous year, with more than half of respondents believing Africa is heading in the wrong direction. In terms of preferred destinations for emigration, North America and Western Europe, including the UK, France, Germany, and Spain, were top choices.

While attitudes towards China and the United States were generally positive, perceptions of Russian influence varied. The survey revealed that a Donald Trump victory in the US presidential election would be seen as a more negative outcome for Africa compared to a win by Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

The survey highlighted the concerns of young Africans about their countries being exploited by foreign companies, particularly in the mining sector. With Africa’s youth population expected to double by 2050, addressing issues such as corruption and foreign influence will be crucial for the continent’s future development.
