The ISIS group has claimed responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing in Kabul that killed at least six people. The blast targeted the Taliban’s prosecution service, according to ISIL, as a revenge for Muslims held in Taliban prisons. The attack occurred in the Qala-e-Bakhtiar area, leaving 13 people wounded, according to Kabul police. ISIL’s affiliate in the region, ISKP, remains active in Afghanistan, targeting civilians, foreigners, and Taliban officials with gun and bomb attacks. This is the first suicide attack claimed by ISIL in Afghanistan since March, when a bombing in Kandahar killed over 20 people. In 2022, a suicide bombing linked to ISIL killed 53 people, primarily girls and young women, at an education centre in Kabul. Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that ISIL existed in the country before but was suppressed by the Taliban, adding that there are no such groups in Afghanistan that pose a threat. The Taliban’s 2021 takeover has reduced overall violence in Afghanistan, but ISIL’s regional affiliate continues to carry out attacks in the country.
