The Boston Red Sox are set to face New York Mets righty Luis Severino in their upcoming game on Monday. The 30-year-old pitcher signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the Mets in the offseason and has been having a solid season with a 3.96 ERA in 26 starts.
Before Severino signed with the Mets, the Red Sox had engaged in conversations with him. Manager Alex Cora praised Severino’s performance this season, noting that it aligns with what they had envisioned for him, specifically with his pitching repertoire and strength. Severino had faced setbacks due to injuries earlier in his career but has made a successful comeback this season.
The Red Sox had identified starting pitching as a top priority in the offseason and had meetings with several free agent pitchers. They ultimately signed Lucas Giolito to a two-year, $38.5 million deal and Cooper Criswell to a one-year, $1 million contract. Giolito has been sidelined for the entire season following elbow surgery, while Criswell has been a solid contributor with a 4.14 ERA in his outings.
Despite only adding two pitchers during the offseason, the Red Sox have Criswell under team control as a pre-arbitration/arbitration player through 2029. The team will be looking to continue their success against Severino and the Mets in the upcoming game.
