West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes identified in Worcester

The first detection of West Nile virus in Massachusetts was made in Worcester, where officials found mosquitoes carrying the virus in the city’s Grove Street section. A pesticide will be sprayed in the area after sunset to reduce the threat of mosquito-borne illness. Since the initial detection in Quincy earlier this month, the virus has been found in 27 mosquito samples in the state, according to the Department of Public Health. Health officials emphasize that people over 50 are at a higher risk for severe disease from West Nile virus, which manifests with symptoms like fever and flu-like illness. In 2023, there were six human cases of the virus in Massachusetts, but so far in 2024, there have been no human or animal cases reported.

The Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project underscores the importance of personal precautions against mosquito bites, both before and after spraying. While spraying can reduce the risk, it cannot entirely eliminate it. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the virus and take necessary measures to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses. As the situation develops, health officials will continue monitoring and taking action to prevent the spread of West Nile virus in Massachusetts.
