Three suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the death of Alexa Stakely, an Ohio mother who was struck by her own vehicle while trying to prevent the theft of it with her 6-year-old son inside. One 16-year-old male has been charged with delinquency murder, while a 17-year-old male and a 19-year-old male have also been arrested. Stakely, a single mother and speech-language pathologist, was picking up her son after a waitressing shift when she saw someone trying to steal her Honda CRV. As she tried to stop them, she was hit by her own vehicle and later died at the hospital. Her son was unharmed during the incident. Stakely’s brother described her as his best friend, mentor, and an amazing human being. Meanwhile, carjackings have increased in some U.S. cities since the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting authorities to crack down on crime. In response to a particularly shocking incident in which a mother was dragged to her death during a carjacking, federal, state, and local authorities have attempted to toughen carjacking laws to prevent further tragic incidents.
