Vice President Kamala Harris is in the process of vetting about a dozen potential candidates to be her running mate as she enters the presidential race following President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside. The selection is seen as crucial given the tight timeline before the Democratic National Convention next month. Harris aims to keep the process drama-free as she and Democrats seek to project confidence after recent turbulent times for the party.
Although there has been speculation about four names, Harris’ team is reportedly considering a broader list, which includes officials such as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Requests for information were sent out on Tuesday to kickstart the vetting process, led by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and his team of lawyers at Covington & Burling.
While Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro initially denied receiving any requests for vetting material, he later referred questions about the process to Harris’ campaign team. The Trump campaign downplayed the significance of Harris’ potential running mate, stating that the governors and senators on the shortlist are interchangeable.
The process of selecting Harris’ running mate is closely watched as it could shape the direction of the Democratic Party in the upcoming election. Stay tuned for updates as the vetting process progresses.
