A tragic accident occurred during a father-daughter hike at Yosemite’s Half Dome earlier this month, resulting in the death of 20-year-old hiker Grace Rohloff. Grace and her father, Jonathan Rohloff, were descending the summit when she slipped and fell. The National Park Service did not immediately respond to the incident. Grace’s father recounted their final moments at the summit, where they shared words of gratitude before a sudden storm rolled in.
The treacherous ascent up the cables is a well-known part of the hike, and Grace slipped on a slick rock section during their descent. Jonathan was unable to reach her in time, and she slid down the mountain, sustaining a severe head fracture. Rescuers took three hours to arrive, and unfortunately, Grace did not survive the fall.
A fundraiser has been set up in Grace’s memory to raise money for a young boy diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, as well as for her high school’s girls’ athletics program. Her father, a principal at an elementary school, believes that there will be reasons for her death that will be revealed in time.
Grace’s former high school teacher described her as a treasure with a humor that would make everyone laugh. She was known for her pure excitement and adventurous spirit. Her father still struggles to understand the tragic accident, but finds solace in believing that God called her home for a reason. Grace’s death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, and she will be deeply missed.
