NASA released dozens of never-before-seen images of cosmic objects captured by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the world’s most powerful X-ray telescope. These images were released in honor of the telescope’s 25th anniversary. The images showcase a range of phenomena, from supernova remnants to distant nebulae and the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Chandra has observed these cosmic objects for thousands of hours, producing a collection of nearly 25,000 images over its time in space. The telescope’s observations have led to discoveries such as the oldest black hole and proof of dark matter. Chandra, launched in 1999, is one of four great telescopes released by NASA that decade, along with the Hubble Space Telescope. Unlike Hubble, Chandra follows an elliptical orbit around Earth, traveling as close as 6,000 miles and as far as 86,400 miles away. The telescope is equipped with super smooth mirrors that focus X-rays to a spot half as wide as a human hair, allowing for detailed observations of cosmic objects. Chandra has played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of the universe, investigating mysteries such as exoplanets and dark energy.
