Salt Lake City has been formally awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics, marking Utah’s second time hosting the prestigious event after the successful 2002 Games. The announcement was made following a vote by the International Olympic Committee in Paris, with Salt Lake City being the sole contender for 2034.
The city’s bid team emphasized its longstanding enthusiasm for the Olympics, showcasing how venues from the 2002 Games have been preserved and are ready for use once again. The plan for the 2034 Games includes a compact layout with all venues located within a one-hour drive of the athletes’ village on the University of Utah campus, without the need for new permanent construction.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox expressed his excitement about cementing the state as North America’s winter sports capital and reiterated the importance of bringing the Games back to Salt Lake City. The 2034 Games are expected to be a dream come true for young athletes with Olympic aspirations, providing top-notch training facilities and world-class venues.
Residents, such as American freestyle skier Christopher Lillis and long-time Park City resident Matthew Lindon, are thrilled about the opportunity to showcase Utah’s growth and success since the 2002 Olympics. Lindon reflected on the city’s motto, “The world is welcome here,” and noted how Salt Lake City has become a premier destination for skiing enthusiasts.
With the successful bid for the 2034 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City is set to once again welcome the world to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship and competition on the global stage.
