The victim of a shooting at a temple in Lowell has been identified as 43-year-old Jose Ortiz, a resident of the town. Ortiz was one of three people wounded in the incident, which occurred early Tuesday morning in the parking lot of the Swaminarayan Temple. Police found two men had been shot, with Ortiz being pronounced dead at the hospital. The other man, a 34-year-old, was treated and released, while a 26-year-old woman sustained minor injuries and was also treated and released.
Paul Garcia, 38, of Dover, New Hampshire, was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting. He faces several other charges including armed assault with intent to murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Investigators believe that the shooting occurred after a physical altercation broke out between two groups in the temple parking lot, where they were drinking and partying. Garcia allegedly began shooting into the crowd, killing Ortiz, before fleeing the scene.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the tragic incident at the temple and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The community is grieving the loss of Ortiz and seeking justice for all those affected by the shooting.
