The International Olympic Committee has selected the French Alps as the host for the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, pending a financial guarantee from the new French government. French President Emmanuel Macron reassured the committee that the government formed after the 2024 Summer Games in Paris would handle all necessary guarantees. The French bid, focusing on ski resorts in the French Alps and ice sports venues in Nice, was the sole candidate with exclusive negotiating rights since November. National governments in host countries are required to underwrite financial and security promises for the Games. However, with France currently having a caretaker government due to political deadlock after recent elections, there is uncertainty about meeting the October 1 deadline set by the IOC. Macron has been unable to appoint a new prime minister and anticipates the caretaker administration will stay in place through the Paris Olympics. This political uncertainty may continue for weeks or months after the Games if the new parliament remains divided. France has previously hosted the Winter Olympics three times.
