New Bedford woman arrested for abandoning her baby’s body in a park

A 22-year-old woman from New Bedford, Daniela Michell Escobar-Mejia, is facing a charge of improper disposal of a body after prosecutors say she left the body of her infant son at Fort Taber Park. The discovery was made on December 9, 2023, when a woman walking in the park noticed a blanket near bushes with a decomposing infant inside a white plastic bag. Escobar-Mejia was identified as a suspect through DNA analysis and surveillance footage and DNA testing confirmed she was the infant’s mother.

Escobar-Mejia was released on personal recognizance and ordered to comply with Department of Children and Families orders while the case is pending. The medical examiner was unable to determine the cause or manner of the infant’s death due to the state of decomposition it was found in. Prosecutors believe Escobar-Mejia left the baby’s body in the park on November 6, meaning it was there for about a month before being discovered.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III expressed gratitude to investigators for their work on the case. Escobar-Mejia will return to court for a pretrial conference on September 12. The case has shocked the community and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death and why the body was left in the park. Stay tuned for further updates as the investigation unfolds.
