Massachusetts Black political leaders inspired by Democrats’ embrace of Kamala Harris


President Joe Biden’s decision to step aside and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris has brought a wave of optimism and energy to left-leaning Black political leaders in Massachusetts and beyond. Ayanna Pressley, the first woman of color elected to Congress from Massachusetts, voiced her strong endorsement for Harris, expressing confidence in her ability to build a winning coalition for the November election.

Rahsaan Hall, president of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, also praised Harris for continuing the fight for equity for all Americans. The sudden shift in Democratic nominees has sparked excitement among many, with Sheriff Steve Tompkins expressing enthusiasm for Harris’ potential presidency.

Harris’ campaign has seen a surge in donations, with over $81 million raised in the 24 hours following Biden’s withdrawal. Black women, including Marie St. Fleur, mobilized to support Harris, raising $1.5 million for her campaign in a matter of hours. The historic nature of Harris’ candidacy as the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica has brought a sense of empowerment and unity within the Black community.

Glynda Carr, CEO of Higher Heights for America, emphasized the significance of Harris’ candidacy in broadening the Democratic coalition. Michel Curry, president of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, highlighted the role of Black women in driving voter turnout. Overall, the support for Harris reflects a cultural and political moment that is energizing the Black community and reshaping the political landscape.
