Following Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic frontrunner in the presidential race, Democrats are now focusing on selecting her running mate to go up against the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, in November. Potential vice presidential nominees being vetted by the Harris campaign include North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
Walz, a newer name on the list, hails from Minnesota, a key state that borders other crucial Democratic-leaning states. He has a background in military service and education, serving as governor since 2018. Walz has recently spoken with Vice President Harris, emphasizing shared values and beliefs in winning the Midwest.
Under Walz’s leadership, Minnesota has passed progressive legislation on issues such as abortion rights, free school meals, and gender-affirming care. While the VP selection process is ongoing, Walz has indicated his willingness to support and prioritize American values if chosen as Harris’s running mate.
With a track record of producing vice presidents, Minnesota’s history could potentially see Walz joining the ranks. As Democrats strategize for the upcoming election, choosing a strong and compatible running mate for Harris remains a key focus.
