Gloucester Waterfront Faces Scandal Just Before Busy Summer Season

Gloucester, a famed fishing port on the North Shore, is currently embroiled in a waterfront scandal involving allegations of office thievery, a forged signature, and the termination of several city employees. The mayor recently ousted Gloucester’s harbormaster, Thomas (TJ) Ciarametaro, over a forgery incident related to a state fisheries grant. Ciarametaro claims he was unfairly fired after discovering discrepancies in city funds and equipment within the department. His firing has divided city officials and residents.

After Ciarametaro installed a hidden video camera to uncover the theft of cash and other items in the harbormaster’s office, former shellfish warden Peter Seminara was allegedly caught on camera stealing $71. Seminara, who was also fired by the city, denies the allegations. The mayor revealed that forged signatures had been found on two contracts for grants from the State Division of Marine Fisheries, leading to Ciarametaro’s replacement as harbormaster. Ciarametaro admitted that his deputy harbormaster, Chad Johnson, had forged the signatures but downplayed the severity of the action.

Ciarametaro is fighting to get his job back, with many city officials and mariners supporting him and questioning the mayor’s decision. Those in his defense praise Ciarametaro for his efforts to improve the Harbor department over the years. However, not everyone is a fan, as Ciarametaro had previously antagonized local lobstermen by testifying against a fishing boat captain in a legal case. Despite the controversy, Ciarametaro’s supporters believe he is an asset to the community and are pushing for his reinstatement.
