The Westfield Starfires made history by winning the season series against the Vermont Lake Monsters for the first time in franchise history with a dominating 10-3 victory on Saturday. The Starfires now have a 27-18-1 record and are in second place in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League standings with 13 games remaining.
The game started as a pitching duel between Jack Martineau and Christian Di Risi, but Westfield broke the shutout in the fifth inning and never looked back. Danny Hussey’s two-run single and a wild pitch plus throwing error gave the Starfires a 7-1 lead they would not relinquish. Martineau pitched a solid game, ensuring the lead stood up and the team added more runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Manager Paul Bonfiglio praised the team’s pitching performance, noting that the at-bats were also strong. The Starfires’ victory puts them at 5-2 against the Lake Monsters this season, clinching the series win with one game remaining.
The Starfires will play their final game before the All-Star Break against the Worcester Bravehearts on Sunday at Fitton Field. The team’s success this season has been driven by strong pitching and solid hitting, and they will look to carry that momentum into the All-Star break and beyond.
