Troy Brown and Matthew Slater have been officially assigned roles on the New England Patriots’ coaching staff for the upcoming 2024 season. Brown, who previously served as the team’s wide receivers coach for the past three seasons, will now focus on skill development and coaching kick/punt returners. This shift comes after the team underwent changes in its offensive coaching staff, with Alex Van Pelt being hired as the offensive coordinator and Tyler Hughes as the new wide receivers coach, alongside assistant coach Tiquan Underwood.
On the other hand, Slater, who retired as a player after the 2023 season, will take on the role of an advisor to head coach Jerod Mayo on both on-field and off-field matters. Mayo expressed confidence in Slater’s intelligence and honesty, indicating that Slater’s presence and insights will be valuable to the team. Slater’s return to the Patriots’ staff was well-received by players, with safety Jabrill Peppers highlighting Slater’s positive impact on team morale.
Brown’s experience in coaching returners has been credited for assisting players like Marcus Jones in their development. While there was initial uncertainty surrounding Brown’s role after the offensive coaching staff changes, Mayo confirmed in February that Brown would remain with the team. The official announcement of Brown and Slater’s coaching roles adds clarity to the Patriots’ coaching lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season.
