Trump claims to have sacrificed for democracy at first rally following assassination attempt – follow live updates on US elections 2024

Former President Donald Trump made a return to the campaign trail in Grand Rapids, Michigan, alongside his new running mate, Ohio senator JD Vance, after narrowly escaping an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Reflecting on the attack, Trump admitted that he shouldn’t be there, referring to the wound on his right ear from the bullet that passed close to his head.

During the rally, Trump launched a scathing attack on Democratic rivals, labeling Joe Biden as a feeble old guy and criticizing the chaos within the Democratic party. Meanwhile, calls for Biden to step down as the Democratic nominee have been growing, with Representative Mark Takano of California and other Democrats urging him to withdraw from the race.

Despite recovering from Covid, Biden is planning potential campaign trips to Georgia and Texas, even as the pressure mounts for him to drop out. In the event that Biden steps aside, the Trump campaign is preparing a major attack plan on Kamala Harris. Additionally, Trump vowed to launch the largest deportation operation in U.S. history if re-elected, promising to restore national borders and crack down on sanctuary cities.

In his speech, Trump praised Elon Musk and criticized United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain, vowing to rescue the American auto industry. The crowd at the rally was polled on who they would prefer Trump to run against in the election, with loud boos directed at both Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.
