A group of seven Democratic Massachusetts state senators have called on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, citing concerns about his ability to vigorously campaign and serve as president for another four years. They believe that Biden should pass the torch to the next generation of Democratic leaders in order to effectively prosecute the case against Donald Trump.
Other Massachusetts politicians, including U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton and Gov. Maura Healey, have also expressed concerns about Biden’s candidacy. Former President Barack Obama and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi have reportedly expressed their concerns privately as well. U.S. Sen. Jon Tester recently became the second Democrat in the U.S. Senate to call on Biden to exit the race.
Despite the growing chorus of voices calling on Biden to step aside, his campaign chair, Jen O’Malley Dillon, has stated that Biden is “absolutely” remaining in the race and believes there are multiple paths to victory. However, the group of local senators in Massachusetts is concerned that if Biden remains at the top of the ticket, Republicans could control the presidency and both houses of Congress.
Democrats at all levels are grappling with the decision of whether Biden should continue his candidacy in the face of declining support and questions about his ability to win against Trump in the next election. The situation remains fluid as the Democratic Party debates the best path forward for the 2024 presidential race.
