Residents of Massachusetts file lawsuit against Cape Cod town regarding wind farm project business operations

A lawsuit has been filed against the Barnstable Town Council by residents of Centerville in response to reaffirming an agreement crucial to the construction of a wind farm project in Nantucket Sound. The lawsuit, filed in Barnstable Superior Court, aims to nullify votes taken in executive sessions related to the project with developer Avangrid.

The host community agreement with Avangrid guarantees financial benefits to the community and moves the New England Wind 1 project forward. The proposed wind farm would have transmission cables running from Craigville Beach to Centerville, with concerns raised about potential negative impacts on the community and environment.

Residents argue that discussions and votes on key aspects of the project should have been conducted in a regular session to allow for public input. Councilor John Crow expressed concerns about the urgency to vote and the absence of the councilor representing Centerville during the decision-making process.

State Rep. Steven Xiarhos highlighted the connection between this project and the Vineyard Wind 1 project, which recently experienced a turbine blade failure. Avangrid also plans to develop another wind farm that would impact woodland areas in Osterville.

Residents criticized the Town Council for not addressing their concerns and accused them of lying about the project’s impact on the community. The lawsuit underscores the importance of transparency and public input in decisions that could have significant consequences for residents and the environment.
