Chinese actress Cheng Pei-pei passed away at the age of 78 in the San Francisco Bay area after battling a degenerative brain disease. Her family confirmed the news in a heartfelt Facebook post, revealing that she had been privately dealing with the disease for some time. Pei-pei was best known for her iconic roles in martial arts films such as “Come Drink With Me” and “Golden Swallow.” She made 20 films with the Shaw Brothers Studio and was considered a pioneer in martial arts roles. In 2000, she starred in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” earning four Oscars and making history as the first foreign-language film to gross over $100 million. Her final film role came in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Mulan.” Survived by her four children, Cheng Pei-pei requested that donations be made to the Brain Support Network in lieu of flowers. Pei-pei will be remembered as the legendary Queen of Martial Arts and for her contributions to the film industry.
