Seven State Senators from Massachusetts Urge President Biden to Withdraw from the Presidential Race

Seven Democratic members of the Massachusetts State Senate are urging President Joe Biden to end his re-election bid in order to nominate another candidate at the Democratic National Convention next month. The senators, including Jason Lewis, Jo Comerford, Jamie Eldridge, Paul Feeney, Pat Jehlen, John Keenan, and Michael Moore, believe that Biden’s current status as the presumptive nominee poses a dangerous liability for the party. They argue that Biden consistently lags behind Donald Trump in national and battleground states, and warn that if he remains at the top of the ticket, Republicans could control the presidency and both houses of Congress.

Pressure on Biden to drop out is intensifying, with other prominent Democrats such as Jon Tester, Martin Heinrich, and Adam Schiff urging him to consider exiting the race. The senators’ open letter calls for a different candidate to be nominated at the DNC, believing that this would inject excitement and grassroots energy into the party and give Democrats a better chance of defeating Trump. While the letter does not specify how the new candidate should be selected, the senators emphasize the need for a competitive process that is inclusive and representative of the entire Democratic base.

A recent poll in Massachusetts found that nearly two-thirds of registered Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents would prefer someone other than Biden as the party’s nominee. The senators believe that selecting a new nominee would give Democrats a fresh opportunity to run a winning campaign and prevent a potential Republican victory in the upcoming election.
