President Biden recently spoke at the 115th NAACP National Convention in Las Vegas, but his future as the Democratic nominee is in question. A survey of Massachusetts delegates found that 62 percent believe Biden should stay in the race, while 15 percent think he should drop out. The survey also revealed that 67 percent would support Vice President Kamala Harris if she were to become the nominee.
With less than a month until the Democratic National Convention, the party is facing a major decision. An ABC News poll showed that 86 percent of Americans believe Biden is too old to serve another term as president. Following a lackluster debate performance and various missteps, over two dozen high-ranking Democratic officials have called on Biden to step aside.
Massachusetts delegates are split on Biden’s candidacy, reflecting larger divisions within the Democratic party. Governor Maura Healey and several members of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation have expressed concerns about Biden’s ability to defeat Donald Trump.
Delegates play a crucial role in the nomination process, representing their state’s votes at the national convention. Massachusetts will send 116 delegates to the convention, including notable figures like Mayor Michelle Wu and Attorney General Andrea Campbell. Congressman Jake Auchincloss believes there are strong candidates who can step up if Biden chooses to step down.
The survey results highlight the uncertainty surrounding Biden’s candidacy and the need for the Democratic party to unite behind a candidate who can defeat Trump in the upcoming election.
