Serbia’s President, Aleksandar Vucic has claimed victory in the recent snap parliamentary elections, stating that his Serbian Progressive Party is set to win almost 47% of the vote, securing an absolute majority in parliament. Opposition parties have cited allegations of election irregularities and cited a culture of rhetorical and physical violence promoted by the ruling party and its allies in the media. There have been reports of various irregularities, including attempted ballot-rigging and voters being bussed in from Bosnia-Herzegovina to vote in Belgrade. Serbia is seen as a candidate to become a member of the European Union, and President Vucic is under pressure to normalize relations with Kosovo. Kosovo declared unilateral independence from Serbia in 2008, a move not recognized by Serbia and several other members. President Vucic is confident that former water polo star Aleksandar Sapic will once again be the leader of the capital, which would mark a significant win for the ruling party. Despite concerns of election irregularities, the President and his party are claiming victory, consolidating their hold on power for at least another term.
