Texas Volleyball Wins Second Consecutive National Championship
In a stunning victory, the No. 5 Texas Volleyball team defeated No. 1 Nebraska in three straight sets to win their second consecutive National Championship at Amalie Arena. With the program’s fifth title in history, Texas Volleyball showed exceptional skill and dominance on the court. The Longhorns served the Cornhuskers off the floor, finishing with 12 service aces, including the final point by senior Asjia O’Neal. Texas held Nebraska to just an .013 hitting percentage in the match, and the 47 points the Longhorns held Nebraska to are the fewest an opponent has been held to in the Championship Match since the NCAA Women’s Volleyball scoring system changed in 2001.
Madisen Skinner was named the 2023 Final Four Most Outstanding Player after an impressive performance, finishing with 16 kills, five digs, one block, and two service aces. Jenna Wenaas also performed well, finishing with nine kills and four blocks, while Bella Bergmark added three kills and four blocks. The Longhorns ended the first set on a 3-0 run, with Skinner leading the way with six kills, securing a 25-22 victory. In the second set, O’Neal served an incredible 11-0 run, including four-straight aces, to give the Longhorns an 18-10 lead, finishing the set with a 25-14 win. Texas closed out the sweep with a completely dominant final set, 25-11.
With this victory, Texas Volleyball becomes the ninth Longhorn program ever to win back-to-back NCAA Championships, joining other successful sports programs at the University of Texas. The University has now captured 65 national team championships in school history, and this victory marks the 10th NCAA Championship claimed by the Longhorns since the start of the 2020-21 academic calendar year.
The victory at the Final Four also resulted in four Texas players being named to the All-Tournament Team, including Emma Halter, Asjia O’Neal, Madisen Skinner, and Ella Swindle. The Most Outstanding Player award went to Madisen Skinner in recognition of her outstanding performance throughout the championship.
