With Argentina experiencing one of its worst economic crises in recent history, psychologists are seeing an increase in the number of patients seeking therapy for anxiety and stress-related conditions. The inflation hitting record levels has led to rising prices and severe financial challenges for many citizens. As a result, it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to make long-term plans and manage long-term stress effectively.
Having the highest rate of psychologists per capita in the world, Argentina is known for its widespread embrace of psychotherapy. However, despite the availability of psychological services, an estimated 35 percent of those in need cannot afford treatment. The situation is expected to worsen under the newly elected President, Javier Milei, who has proposed budget cuts to mend the economy, resulting in the potential lack of affordability for mental health services.
The economic situation has had a significant impact on the mental health of the citizens, with more than half of participants in a study reporting a “crisis”, citing the economy as the leading cause. The anxiety and stress resulting from these economic woes have led to sleep deprivation and negative impacts on the country’s overall mood.
Psychologists in the country are facing significant challenges in addressing their patients’ mental health needs, and there are concerns that the lack of psychological attention will have adverse effects on the population, especially those with fewer resources. Julieta Bieber, an administrative assistant, highlighted how the economic struggles have affected her quality of life and caused a widespread bad mood among the citizens.
As Argentina continues to grapple with its economic challenges, mental health professionals are working tirelessly to address the mental health needs of the population and offer support amid a deeply concerning financial crisis.
