Former Texas state trooper Pablo Talavera Jr. has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for lying to the FBI about his father’s drug trafficking operation and his involvement in it. Talavera, who previously worked for the Texas Department of Public Safety as part of the Operation Lone Star border security initiative, admitted to using his position to run license plate checks on vehicles believed to be those of law enforcement for his father’s criminal organization. His father, Pablo Talavera Sr., is currently serving a 21-year federal sentence for drug trafficking. The investigation into the Talavera family began in 2019 when law enforcement started looking into the organization responsible for transporting large quantities of methamphetamine from the Rio Grande Valley to Tennessee. Talavera Jr. initially denied any knowledge of his father’s activities, but later admitted to lying about it. Talavera Jr. has been ordered to serve 18 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release. After his sentencing, he was allowed to remain free on bond until he surrenders to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to serve his time. The case illustrates the lengths that some individuals will go to in order to protect and support criminal activities, as well as the consequences they face when they betray the public trust and their law enforcement positions.
